The War and Treaty
About This Event
The War and Treaty is Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter (formerly Blount), a husband-and-wife duo whose sound runs through Americana, Southern soul, gospel, blues, and country without settling on just one. Michael's origin story is genuinely unusual for the genre: an Army veteran who served in Iraq, he says he came across a working piano inside one of Saddam Hussein's abandoned Baghdad palaces while on patrol and taught himself to play right there.
Tanya had already built a music career of her own before the duo formed — she started performing at 16, appeared in a 1993 Whoopi Goldberg film, and released a solo R&B album years before meeting Michael. The two started recording together as Trotter & Blount in 2016 before rebranding as The War and Treaty for their 2018 debut, Healing Tide.
The duo has since become a genuine crossover force: a Zach Bryan duet cracked the Billboard Hot 100 top 20, and they were the first Black duo nominated for both the CMA and ACM Vocal Duo of the Year, in back-to-back years. They picked up Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best American Roots Song, and the Americana Music Association has named them Duo/Group of the Year more than once.
