Hiss Golden Messenger with Sam Amidon
About This Event
Hiss Golden Messenger is the recording name M.C. Taylor has used since the mid-2000s, first out of the Bay Area and then, for most of the project's life, out of Durham, North Carolina. The sound sits at the overlap of Southern gospel, country-soul, and the kind of loose, warm Americana that doesn't chase a single genre so much as borrow from all of them — Taylor has called it music made for people trying to hold a family and a faith and a conscience together at the same time, which is a fair description of why the songs land harder live than on record.
The band has put out a steady run of albums through the 2010s and 2020s, with Taylor's voice — a warm, cracked tenor — as the constant through lineup and label changes. This date is part of the 'I'm People' tour, with Sam Amidon, the Vermont-raised folk singer and fiddler known for reworking old ballads, opening.
Worth knowing: resale listings put tickets starting around $54, but that's not Thalia Hall's own face-value price — check the venue's listing before buying. Thalia Hall runs cashless.
