Death From Above 1979: Private Lives Tour
About This Event
Just a drummer and a bass player making a sound that's somehow louder than most full bands — the Toronto dance-punk duo that's been proving that math for two decades. Wine Lips opens.
The whole thing started by accident in 2001: Jesse Keeler had bass gear stored at his house for a Detroit show that got canceled after 9/11, so he invited Sebastien Grainger over to jam just to put the equipment to use — and the two liked what came out enough to start a band. They were originally called just Death From Above, until the dance label DFA Records (run by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy) objected to the name, forcing the "1979" onto the end. Their 2004 debut, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, turned that no-guitarist setup into a genuine arena-touring act — they opened for Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age — before the duo split in 2006 and didn't reunite until 2011.
