Digable Planets – Blowout Comb 30th Anniversary Tour
About This Event
Classic hip-hop group's 30th-anniversary tour, Rich Robbins opening.
The trio — Ishmael Butler ("Butterfly"), Craig Irving ("Doodlebug"), and Mary Ann Vieira ("Ladybug Mecca") — broke through in 1993 with the Grammy-winning "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," a jazz-sampling single that made them unlikely MTV staples. Blowout Comb, the album this tour marks 30 years of, followed in 1994 and traded the debut's breezy cool for something heavier: live instrumentation and a spoken-word lineage pulled straight from the Last Poets, read at the time as a deliberately political meditation on Black liberation rather than a pop sequel.
Worth knowing: tickets run from roughly $57 general admission up to $88 for advance reserved spots, and doors are at 7 for an 8 PM start — check metrochicago.com for current availability.
