Don Pasquale
About This Event
Don Pasquale is Donizetti doing pure comedy, not his usual tragic bent — a fizzy 'comedy of errors' set in rococo 19th-century Rome, and it's back at the Lyric for the first time in more than a decade. An aging bachelor's disowned nephew enlists a wry fiancée and the old man's long-suffering doctor to run a string of dupes and double-crosses to reclaim his inheritance — all in the name of love, and all played for laughs.
Baritone Misha Kiria takes the title role opposite soprano Ying Fang as Norina, with Alberto Robert as the nephew Ernesto and Ian Rucker as Dr. Malatesta running the scheme. Lyric Music Director Enrique Mazzola conducts; Mariame Clément directs a production designed by Julia Hansen.
Worth knowing: six performances only, Nov 12 through 27, sung in Italian with projected English titles, running 2 hours 40 minutes with one intermission — a genuinely approachable length and tone if the Lyric's heavier dramatic works have kept you away before.
