It has been family-owned and operated at Grand and St. Clair since 1997, a few blocks off the Mag Mile, with the white-tablecloth look of a place that has never needed to chase a trend. The menu is traditional Italian with touches of Sardinia. That means malloreddus, the little Sardinian gnocchetti, with sausage, mushrooms, peas and pecorino, and linguine with clams and bottarga, alongside the comfort classics: gnocchi in the house vodka sauce, lasagna al forno and a 20 oz veal chop done Parmigiana or Milanese. The signature move is the Volare Risotti: acquerello rice loaded with mussels, clams, shrimp, scallops and calamari, finished in tomato or, for the brave, squid ink.

Start with the Insalata di Mare (octopus, calamari, conch, shrimp and cuttlefish) or the fire-grilled Grigliata Mista, and order the pizza oven's Bufalina with mortadella and truffle oil for the table. Volare opens at 4pm Monday through Thursday and at 3pm Friday through Sunday, which makes it an easy early dinner before a show.
