ChicagoChicago didn't wait for permission to become a great city. It drained a swamp, reversed a river, and rebuilt taller after the whole place burned down in a night. "I ❤ Chi" is our shorthand for that — a city that's never once done showing off, and a reminder to actually go look at it.
A city that keeps doing things nobody asked it to
Every city has a founding myth. Chicago has receipts. In the 1850s, the whole downtown was sinking into swampland — so builders jacked entire stone buildings up on screw-jacks, block by block, and packed new foundations underneath while business went on inside. A decade later, engineers looked at the Chicago River dumping sewage straight into Lake Michigan — the same lake the city drank from — and did something no one had done at that scale before: they reversed the river's flow, sending it away from the lake for good. It's still one of the only rivers on Earth that runs backward on purpose.
Then, in October 1871, most of it burned. The Great Chicago Fire took out roughly three square miles in a single night. Chicago's answer wasn't caution — it was the Home Insurance Building, finished in 1885 and generally credited as the world's first skyscraper. The city that just watched itself burn decided the fix was to build taller than anyone ever had. Eight years after that, Chicago threw the World's Columbian Exposition — the 1893 World's Fair — and used it to debut the Ferris wheel, built specifically to out-do Paris's Eiffel Tower. The same fair is also where a Palmer House pastry chef, working under Bertha Palmer, invented the brownie: a dessert portable enough for a box lunch, dreamed up because a hotel kitchen was asked to solve a real, specific problem. The Palmer House still bakes that original recipe today. That's Chicago's whole personality in one dessert — practical, a little stubborn, quietly world-changing.
Four stars, one flag
Chicago's flag has two blue stripes and four red six-pointed stars — each one standing for a real event: Fort Dearborn, the Great Fire, the 1893 World's Fair, and the 1933 Century of Progress. The points are six, not five, on purpose, so it could never be mistaken for the U.S. flag.
77 neighborhoods, no shortcuts
There's no single "real Chicago." There are 77 of them, each with its own accent, its own flag-worthy pride, and usually its own decades-old spot nobody outside the neighborhood has heard of. That's not a flaw in this city. That's the whole point of it.
The L, since 1892
Chicago's elevated train — everyone just calls it the L — has been running since 1892, making it one of the oldest rapid-transit systems still operating in North America. Downtown got nicknamed "the Loop" because the tracks literally loop around it. The name's stuck for over a century.
Why we're the ones saying it
Chicago Specials didn't start as a company. It started as a single dad and his son, walking Chicago's neighborhoods on weekends with no business plan and no content calendar — just an honest habit of loving this city out loud. That habit is the entire origin story. Everything else, the site, the map, the specials board, got built from scratch around it: no franchise, no investor deck, no template borrowed from some other city's version of this idea. It only works because it's Chicago-specific, and it only exists because two people decided this city deserved better than a stale "best of" list. That makes Chicago Specials its own kind of gem — a small, stubborn, homemade thing, the same as most of what we point you toward.
"I ❤ Chi" is the short version of all of that. Not a slogan we bought — a thing we actually mean, said the same way a regular says it about their corner bar.
