Venteux sits on the ground floor of the Carbide & Carbon Building, the black-and-gold Art Deco tower at Michigan and South Water, and it plays the part: a Parisian-style brasserie, café and oyster bar that runs from 7am croissants to steak frites at dinner.

The brioche burger — an 80/20 chuck blend from chef Donald Young (Chicago's youngest-ever Michelin-star chef), topped with melted raclette, crispy shallots, and a mint-Thai-basil-cilantro mix — is cited alongside The Ives, Bistro Monadnock, and Francois Frankie as one of the Loop's best burgers.

Executive chef Marcel Heiduk keeps the menu classic with a few twists. There's French onion soup under a gruyère lid, escargot in maître d' butter, moules frites, a bouillabaisse built on the day's fish, and a seafood tower for when someone else is paying. The reason to know about it, though, is the weekday happy hour, Monday through Friday from 4 to 6pm. East Coast oysters drop to $1 each (half-dozen minimum, with mignonette and lemon), and the bar menu fills in around them: escargot, gruyère sliders, baked brie with truffle honey, tarte flambée, steak tartare on a potato fritter, plus house wine, espresso martinis, Aperol spritzes and you-call-it well cocktails.

For a Mag Mile address a block from the river, that's about as good as it gets. The week has more tricks. Wednesday is Wine Down, with half off bottles from 4 to 9pm in the dining room, and bottomless brunch (mimosas, rosé, bloody Marys or Aperol spritzes) runs every day from 7am to 3:30pm. Dinner is served Monday through Saturday until 9pm, and reservations are taken.
