The Gundis Kurdish Kitchen

Super GemLakeview · Kurdish Community-sourced, unverified
📍 2909-11 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60657

Mehmet Besir Duzgun and Mehmet Besir Yavuz, both Kurdish immigrants from the Mardin province of southeastern Turkey, opened Chicago's first Kurdish restaurant with a genuinely cross-cultural kitchen: Executive Chef Juan M. Gonzalez, who built his fine-dining background at private clubs in Palm Springs and La Jolla, leads a team of Kurdish cooks from Syria and Turkey using traditional Anatolian technique.

Come for the stuffed chicken, come back for the breakfast — this is one of the only places in the city doing Kurdish food at all, let alone this well.

The restaurant has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for consistently good, reasonably priced food, and the Michelin Guide itself specifically calls out the weekend breakfast — bottomless Kurdish tea, black sesame-studded bread, house preserves, eggs scrambled with roasted peppers and tomatoes. That Kurdish breakfast, served only Saturdays and Sundays, is genuinely elaborate: cheeses, jams, fried cheese, olives, fries, cucumbers, tomatoes, and bread, meant for an entire table to share rather than one person's plate.

For dinner, the Mardin Eggplant Stew and Adana kebab are the standard orders, and the dessert sampler — coconut milk pudding, rice pudding with apricot, chocolate mousse, baklawa — is built to be shared the same way. Reservations move fast on weekend mornings specifically because of that breakfast reputation.
