Taste of Peru has run out of a small storefront on Clark Street in Rogers Park since 1998, wedged between a nail salon and a laundromat in a strip of stores that gives zero visual indication of what's actually happening inside.

Lomo saltado, ceviche de corvina, and a deep aji-driven Peruvian menu from a family-run Rogers Park spot that's been at it since 1998 — real enough to land a Food Network Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives feature.

Owner Cesar Izquierdo opened it specifically because Chicago didn't have a genuinely authentic Peruvian option at the time, and almost three decades later it's still the answer to that same gap — real enough to get a Food Network Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives feature along the way. The menu runs through the dishes that define Peruvian cooking's layered history: lomo saltado, the Chinese-Peruvian stir-fry that reflects Peru's own Cantonese immigration wave, ceviche de corvina built on citrus rather than heat, and a straightforward arroz con pollo that's deceptively hard to get right.

Regulars will tell you the real move is a second visit — the ceviche gets people in the door, but the rest of the aji-driven menu is where the kitchen actually shows what it can do. Walk-ins are easy, the room is small and family-run, and the cooking hasn't needed to change to stay relevant.
