Elle Lei, originally from China, had zero interest in cooking before she started as a dishwasher at an Italian restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky — she taught herself macarons at home before training at Le Chocolat du Bouchard in Naperville and launching Sugoi Sweets out of a commercial kitchen there in 2019.

When her husband and business partner, Jason Rice, took a job in Japan, Lei used the move to dive deep into Japanese dessert technique, and brought that back to open this Chicago shop in 2022. The name means 'amazing' or 'awesome' in Japanese — the equivalent of an English speaker exclaiming 'Oh, wow!' Hand-made bonbons, caramels, and other confections come from natural ingredients, plus dairy-free soft serve that tastes genuinely rich, not like a substitute; bonbons are a popular gift item.
