Heisler Hospitality took over a real Polish-immigrant tavern on Western Avenue that had been slinging drinks since 1989 and kept the bones — the taxidermy, the Art Deco bar, the lived-in dive-bar shell — while quietly turning the drink program into one of the city's most respected. There's no cocktail list to speak of; four drinks rotate daily at the bartenders' whim, built around the house's own blended-amaro machine, which pours chilled shots and soda highballs the way a dive bar pours well whiskey. The signature Sportsman's Cocktail — whiskey, amaro, bitters, and a rinse of absinthe — is the one constant on an otherwise moving menu.
It's cash only, which tracks with the whole bit: cheap, unpretentious, and clearly more interested in the drink in your hand than in impressing you. The backyard, strung with lights and big enough for a real crowd, turns into a summer cookout series most years with some of the city's best kitchens (El Che Bar, Bad Hunter, Quiote have all shown up) doing the grilling. It's a bartender's bar as much as a civilian one — the kind of place industry people land after their own shifts — and that pedigree, more than any list of awards, is why it's stayed a fixture for over a decade in a scene where flashier rooms close every year.
