El Solazo has been a West Elsdon staple on South Pulaski since 2007, and its 2021 reopening turned a reliable neighborhood Mexican restaurant into something more ambitious: a first-ever cocktail program, a refreshed menu and an outdoor patio, from owner Pepe Barajas, whose sister restaurant La Josie in the West Loop holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

The ceviche de coco is the light starter, and the ribeye tacos are the reason to come back for dinner instead of just drinks.

The cooking pays tribute to Barajas' childhood around his family's taco stands in Jalisco — tequila's birthplace — and the agave bar backs it up with more than 100 mezcals plus tequila and raicilla. Happy hour runs weekdays from opening to 6pm (that's 5 to 6pm Wednesday and Thursday, 4 to 6pm Friday, since it's closed Monday and Tuesday). It's a genuinely cheap way to eat here: $3 carnitas and Yucatán-style cochinita pibil tacos, a $4 blue-corn sope with mole poblano, an $8 shrimp tostada with salsa macha, $8 micheladas, $9 margaritas and palomas on El Tequileño, a $10 cantarito with Jarritos and tajín, and $4 Victoria, Modelo or Tecate Light.

The patio gets a DJ some nights, reservations and walk-ins are both welcome, and weekend brunch runs Sundays from 11am. Don't expect complimentary chips and salsa — Solazo is one of the rare Mexican spots that skips them. Hours are 5 to 10pm Wednesday and Thursday, 4pm to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and 11am to 9pm Sunday.
