Semilla's Latin Kitchen opened in Rogers Park in 2021 from husband-and-wife owners Jose Roque and Patricia Norabuena -- Roque a founding partner at Wicker Park's well-regarded Amaru, Norabuena a former Pump Room cook with her own Peruvian roots -- and the menu runs both of their backgrounds at once rather than picking a lane.

A daily happy hour and a heated, live-music patio backing up genuinely upscale Mexican-Peruvian fusion — truffle-corn-mushroom quesadillas, Peruvian pepper-marinated octopus — from chefs with real Amaru and Pump Room pedigree.

Peruvian ceviche built on mahi-mahi, onion, and sweet potato sits alongside octopus marinated in Peruvian pepper sauce and bass finished with red onion and habanero salsa, while the Mexican side gets its own creative treatment -- quesadillas stuffed with truffle, corn, mushroom, and pumpkin flour rather than the standard cheese-and-nothing-else version.
