R.J. Grunts

DrinkLincoln Park · American Community-sourced, unverified
📍 2056 N Lincoln Park W, Chicago, IL 60614

R.J. Grunts, opened June 10, 1971 by Rich Melman and Jerry Orzoff, was the very first Lettuce Entertain You restaurant and is credited as one of the first to create an all-you-can-eat salad bar; it still exudes funky '70s style, décor, and music, and sits right by Lincoln Park Zoo — great for a pre/post-zoo family meal.

The Tuna Melt is a classic order in a genuinely classic room, and the $5 happy hour Thursday through Saturday makes it an easy decision.

The Tuna Melt is a classic order in a genuinely classic room. Thursday through Saturday, 8-10pm, a dozen classic cocktails run $5 each — Chicago Magazine has called it the best happy hour in the city, and it fills up fast enough that arriving right at 8pm is the real move.

A 4.6-4.8 rating across more than 2,100 OpenTable reviews backs up the reputation, though at least one reviewer has pushed back on the hype.
