The Purple Pig has been one of the Magnificent Mile's few genuinely local destinations since 2009, when Jimmy Bannos Jr. — a fourth-generation restaurateur who started busing tables at his father's Heaven on Seven at five — opened a small-plates wine bar built around 'cheese, swine and wine.' The cooking won him the James Beard Rising Star Chef award in 2014, and in 2019 the restaurant moved a block down Michigan Avenue to 444 N. Michigan, a few steps off the river.

Two dishes explain why people keep coming back. The milk-braised pork shoulder is seared, then cooked low and slow in milk, pork stock, herbs and vegetables until it's tender enough to eat with a spoon — The Daily Meal called it the best comfort food outside your mom's kitchen. The roasted bone marrow comes as two big bones with a sharp, vinegary parsley salad and buttered toast, and the Chicago Tribune praised its perfectly scoopable texture.

Around those, the menu runs deep on cured meats, cheeses, Mediterranean small plates and a long list of wines by the glass, with an outdoor patio on Michigan Avenue when the weather cooperates. It's loud and busy, and a Resy reservation (bookable up to three months out) is genuinely hard to land; the kitchen runs from late morning through dinner daily. No current happy hour could be confirmed, so treat it as a destination rather than a deal. A sibling location opened at Oakbrook Center in March 2026, bringing the same menu to the suburbs.
