Puffy Cakes opened its West Town location on Chicago Avenue in June 2024, an outpost of a dessert shop that started in 2023 with a specific mission: bring real Japanese-style souffle cheesecake to Chicago rather than a dense New York-style version with a different name slapped on it.

The cheesecake itself is the draw — light, airy, closer to a souffle than a traditional slice, served in three sizes with signature sauce toppings — alongside a cheese tart and a chocolate tart that both lean into the same melt-in-your-mouth, crumbly-crust construction. The macaron case goes well past the usual flavor rotation, running miso apple pie and honey lavender alongside more expected options, and ube and matcha lattes round out the drink menu on top of a straightforward partnership with La Colombe for the actual coffee.

It's become enough of a cozy-weather destination that regulars specifically recommend grabbing a seat by the fireplace once the fall menu rolls out. For a neighborhood with no shortage of coffee shops, Puffy Cakes earns its spot by being specific about one dessert rather than generic about all of them.
