Oromo Cafe

Lincoln Square · Coffee/Turkish Coffee Community-sourced, unverified
📍 4703 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60625

Oromo Cafe takes its name from Oromia, the Ethiopian region widely credited as coffee's birthplace, and the menu backs up the reference rather than just borrowing the name for atmosphere — this is one of the few Chicago cafes actually serving traditional Turkish coffee alongside the usual espresso lineup.

$
A Coconut Cubano (espresso and coconut sugar) and traditional Turkish coffee, from one of the few Chicago cafes serving it, at a shop named directly after coffee's Ethiopian birthplace.

Cenk Duman opened the Lincoln Square original in August 2016 with his father and business partner Ed Duman, building a sustainable, fair-trade, health-conscious shop with real vegan and gluten-free options built in from the start rather than bolted on later — tahini muffins, a turmeric-and-ginger latte, and a Coconut Cubano that swaps in coconut sugar for the usual simple syrup are the kind of specific, slightly unusual choices that separate a cafe with an actual point of view from one running the standard playbook. The concept worked well enough to expand to a second location on Western Avenue in Bucktown. Ed Duman has since branched out further, with a Turkish restaurant called Et Chi slated for a nearby Lincoln Square storefront — proof the family's appetite for Turkish-inflected concepts in this neighborhood isn't done expanding.

No happy hour applies to a daytime coffee shop, and no social media account could be independently confirmed in research despite a deliberate search — the cafe's online ordering runs through Toast rather than its own storefront, which is common enough for a shop this size but worth noting as a gap rather than an oversight. Hours run early morning into early evening, seven days a week.
