This Uptown shop at 4810 N. Sheridan is the second location, a few blocks from the Argyle strip's Vietnamese restaurants and set up mostly for takeout. The bread is the point. Nhu Lan bakes its own baguettes, and the result is the shatter-crisp crust and airy middle that separates a real banh mi from a sandwich on a sub roll, packed with pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño and a smear of pâté. The house Nhu Lan Special (a cold-cut combination) and the roast pork are the two orders reviewers keep coming back to, and regulars at this location single out the pork roll.
Prices have climbed from the near-legendary $4 of older reviews to roughly $8.50 to $10 a sandwich in recent write-ups, which is still a bargain for something this good; confirm current prices on the shop's online ordering page. There's no standing discount here, and there doesn't need to be. Expect a grab-and-go counter rather than a sit-down lunch, and call ahead or order online during the weekday rush.
