Music Box Theatre

AdmissionLakeview Community-sourced, unverified
📍 3733 N Southport Ave, Chicago, IL 60613

The Music Box has run as a single-screen movie palace since it opened on August 22, 1929, and it still shows its age on purpose: a dark blue ceiling painted with twinkling stars and moving clouds, walls styled like an Italian courtyard, and a theater organ (added in 1984, decades after the building itself) played live for weekend intermissions and monthly silent films.

It's the last theater in the neighborhood still doing this, not just an old building that happens to show movies — midnight screenings of cult classics on weekends are its own draw, separate from first-run titles.

A $60/year membership drops general admission from $11 to $8; even non-members get $8 Sat/Sun 11:30am matinees and $9 for the first Tue-Thu screening.
