Mano Modern Cafe is the West Town coffee counter that quietly runs one of the best Filipino breakfasts in the city.

Co-owners Melvin Reyes and Zandro Zafra named it for mano, the Filipino gesture of respect where you press an elder's hand to your forehead, and the whole place feels built around that kind of warmth, from the bright, design-forward room on Ashland to a menu that treats Filipino comfort food like it belongs next to your morning latte. Chicago Magazine noticed in March 2024 with a piece called 'Mano Modern Is on Island Time.' The breakfast lineup is the move. Pan de sal sliders stack longanisa, candied tocino bacon or Spam with a fried egg, American cheese and a Pinoy bang bang sauce, and the all-day silogs pair those same meats, or a burger steak with beef coconut gravy, with garlic rice and a fried egg for about $10 to $11.

Breakfast wraps, lumpia by the half-dozen or the 50-piece barangay pack, rice bowls and lunch entrées fill out the rest, and vegetarians get an Impossible sausage slider and wrap. On the coffee side, there's drip, espresso drinks, a cafe con leche made with condensed milk, an espresso tonic, and matcha and hojicha sourced from Uji in Kyoto. Order ahead online for pickup; the cafe doesn't publish a phone number.
