Libertad Sur is the Wicker Park sibling of Libertad, the Skokie restaurant that has been serving modern Latin American small plates since 2011, and it brings the same open-kitchen, share-everything energy to North Avenue.

The menu draws on traditional ingredients, family influences and the owners' travels, and almost everything is built to pass around the table. Dinner runs from a salmon and tuna crudo on a crisp tlayuda and chicken tinga flautas to Spanish octopus with chorizo and spiced garbanzos, Bar Harbor mussels in a tomato-coconut broth, a wild mushroom chile relleno with goat cheese, lomo saltado, St. Louis ribs glazed in pineapple-chipotle barbecue sauce and skirt-steak carne asada with chipotle goat cheese and yuca fries. Vegetarians get real options, from the black bean tlacoyo to a sweet corn arepa.

Cocktails come from the same program as the original, with margaritas built on fresh-squeezed lime and a solid list of mocktails. Weekend brunch is a big draw, running 10am to 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays with chilaquiles, shakshuka verde, a breakfast torta, carne en su jugo and a churro French toast with cream cheese frosting. Dinner starts at 5pm Tuesday through Sunday, it's closed Mondays, and it's a short walk from the Damen Blue Line.
