Lake Avenue Tavern (formerly Johnny's Kitchen & Tap)

Iconic/NotableGlenview (suburb) · American Community-sourced, unverified
📍 1740 Milwaukee Ave, Glenview, IL

This Glenview standby is mid-transformation, and the story is more continuity than change: Mary Venezia, who has owned the restaurant since it opened as Johnny's Kitchen & Tap in 1995, is rebranding the Milwaukee Avenue space as Lake Avenue Tavern in 2026 rather than selling or walking away -- same owner, same building, new name and sharper focus.

$$

Johnny's served its final regular meals around Mother's Day weekend in May 2026, with the relaunch targeted for later that summer under a concept the restaurant describes as "an elevated take on all-American feel-good food." The new menu leans harder into steaks and chops, but Venezia is keeping the dishes regulars show up for -- wood-roasted chicken and baby back ribs survive the rebrand intact -- alongside craft cocktails and a dining room getting a more contemporary look, with a bar built for watching sports.

For more than 30 years this has been a genuine neighborhood fixture for happy hour and dinner, and the new name doesn't change who's behind the bar.
