La Luna

Pilsen · Modern Mexican Community-sourced, unverified
📍 1726 S Racine Ave, Chicago, IL 60608

La Luna opened in Pilsen in January 2019 as Samantha Sanchez's first restaurant of her own, after years working inside her father Sam Sanchez's Third Coast Hospitality Group — and it reads like someone who grew up around restaurants finally got to build the room she wanted.

$$
La Sala, the downstairs mezcal lounge with antique board games and a shuffleboard table, pouring Loteria-themed cocktails below a quesabirria-and-camarones-zarandeados dining room.

Upstairs is a dining room doing modern Mexican plates with real specificity: quesabirria, camarones zarandeados, a rotating pulpo y papa taco, elote and cochinita pibil that regulars keep ordering years in. Downstairs is La Sala, a subterranean mezcal lounge stocked with antique board games and an actual shuffleboard table, pouring Loteria-themed cocktails under chef Marco Colin and beverage director Karla Maria's menu. The happy hour runs Tuesday through Thursday — roughly $3.75 tacos, $5 tequila and mezcal shots, $10 palomas and margaritas, $25 paloma pitchers, per OpenTable's current listing, though The Infatuation's independent review backs up the same Tuesday-to-Thursday window with slightly different numbers, so treat the exact prices as a starting point rather than gospel.

Weekends bring brunch and hands-on tortilla-making classes, a more hospitable way to teach a technique than just putting it on a menu. Sanchez made free menudo available to anyone who needed it during the restaurant's first pandemic year, before any of this — no James Beard nod yet, but nearly a thousand OpenTable reviews average out to 4.7 stars, which is the kind of consistency that's harder to fake than a single rave.
