This Diversey Avenue storefront is the original — Reynel Mendoza, his wife Sandra Sotz, his sister Maria "Chayo" Mendoza, and her husband Leonard "Leo" Ramos opened it here in September 2016, years after moving from Santa Maria Quiegolani, Oaxaca to Chicago in 2004 and cooking Italian food at an Andersonville restaurant to learn the business first.

The restaurant's own name is Zapotec for their home village and means "old stone." Bold moles, handmade tamales, and mezcal cocktails earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand five years running since 2020, before a second location ever opened in Uptown — this is the one that built the reputation the Sheridan Road location now trades on, not the other way around.
