Kanin

Super GemLincoln Square · Filipino-Hawaiian Community-sourced, unverified
📍 5131 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60625

Kanin means cooked rice in Tagalog, which is a modest name for a menu that's drawn lines down the block since opening — WGN ran a whole segment on it specifically because of how far the queue stretched on an ordinary day.

$
Spam musubi with real Filipino range — longanisa-and-egg, tempura shrimp with sinigang flavor, a vegetarian tomato-jam version — plus poke-stuffed inari and ube banana pudding, at a grab-and-go spot that's outgrown its own pop-up origins.

The draw is Spam musubi done with real range: the classic version sits alongside a Filipino twist with egg and sweet longanisa sausage, another with tempura shrimp and the tamarind-sour flavor of sinigang soup, and a vegetarian version built on tomato jam and egg. Grilled skewer bento boxes pull from both sides of the Filipino-Hawaiian identity in the name, 'poke bombs' stuff fish and rice into fried tofu-skin inari pockets, and Hawaiian mac salad plus ube banana pudding round out a menu that never pretends to be just one cuisine wearing another's name.

The whole thing started as a pop-up two doors down inside Side Practice Coffee before earning its own storefront — a real success story, not a marketing line, and one worth knowing before walking in expecting a sit-down restaurant rather than the grab-and-go bodega it actually is.
