Maya-Camille Broussard started the bakery in 2014 to honor her late father, Steven Broussard, a criminal defense attorney who called himself 'the Pie Master' and spent his off hours baking pies while believing, professionally and personally, that everyone deserves a real shot at redemption. That belief still drives the business: Justice of the Pies runs an annual pie drive that funds Cabrini Green Legal Aid, which supports low-income people navigating the criminal justice system — making this one of the rare Chicago bakeries where the mission is baked as literally into the operation as the crust. After nine years running as a satellite and pop-up bakery, Broussard finally opened a permanent home in 2023 inside a converted former dentist's office in Avalon Park.
The pies themselves have earned real praise independent of the backstory — The Infatuation called the strawberry basil key lime pie the best in the city, and the 'Earth Wind + Fire' flight (lemon espresso, cucumber, mango, and chili lime) shows off a genuinely adventurous flavor range beyond standard fruit and cream. Savory options like chicken pot pie come out after 11am for anyone wanting a meal rather than dessert. It's only open Friday through Sunday, 9am to 5pm, so plan a weekend trip — this is a destination bakery, not a daily-stop neighborhood shop, and worth the specific trip to Avalon Park.
