Vincenzo Graziano left Bagheria, a seaside town outside Palermo, chasing a girl who, it turned out, was already engaged. He worked in his uncle's New York butcher shop, then landed penniless in Chicago's Little Sicily, sold groceries from a horse-drawn cart and built the wholesale business his great-grandson still runs on Randolph Street, which has been the family's home since 1937. For seventy years it was an importer and wholesaler of olive oil, cheese, olives and spices. In 2007, fourth-generation Jim Graziano talked his father into letting him open a sub shop inside the store, and lines out the door followed. The Mr. G is the reason. It stacks sharp imported provolone, hot soppressata, prosciutto di Parma and Volpi genoa on a truffle-mustard balsamic vinaigrette with hot oil, Roman-style artichokes and basil.

Eater put it on its list of Chicago's most iconic sandwiches in 2013. The rest of the board holds up too: a muffuletta with the house mix on a D'Amato's sesame roll, Tempesta porchetta, and a Tufano antipasto. The shelves still sell the imports, plus the house giardiniera by the jar. Lunch runs Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm, and a late-night window opens Thursday through Saturday evenings. You can also order online for pickup or catering.
