Inner Town Pub likes to say "time stands still here," and the claim holds up: this Ukrainian Village fixture traces its roots to a Prohibition-era tavern inside a building pushing 100 years old, and it's been running as Inner Town since 1983 -- well over four decades under the same dim lighting, red vinyl booths, and wall-to-wall clutter of taxidermy and Elvis memorabilia that nobody's bothered to update.

By the late 1980s and early '90s it had become a go-to hangout for the neighborhood's bohemian artist crowd, the kind that didn't need the jukebox updated or the pool table replaced, just cheap drinks and somewhere to sit. That reputation has outlasted the gentrification happening around it on Thomas Street.

It's still a free-pool, free-darts, no-frills kind of room, and it's been written up often enough -- Chicago Bar Project, Scoundrel's Field Guide, Time Out, and more than 800 Restaurant Guru reviews -- that the dive-bar credentials aren't really in question.
