Owners Scott and Craig run it as a classic Chicago neighborhood joint, with murals of Chicago greats painted around the dining room (the game is to name them all), and it's a Vienna Beef Hall of Fame inductee. The menu covers what the restaurant calls American childhood classics and then keeps going. Hot dogs start at $5.09, with chili dogs, double dogs, grilled jumbo dogs, Polish sausage and bratwurst, and a homemade Italian beef and a beef-and-sausage combo hold down the sandwich board alongside gyros, corned beef, pastrami and a Reuben. The burger list runs from a quarter-pound cheeseburger to a pizza burger, a cheeseburger topped with gyro meat and the Q-Burger on a pretzel bun with fried mac and cheese.
The specialties are where Herm's gets ambitious: Herm's Special is a half-pound burger on dark rye with American and Swiss, the Grilled Cheeseburger tucks a half-pound patty between two buttery grilled cheese sandwiches, and the Cardiac Sandwich stacks fried salami and pastrami with pepper jack on an onion roll. There are wings, tacos, salads, pasta and vegetarian options too. It's open daily from 11am to about 9pm, an hour later on weekends, with pickup and delivery ordering online.
