Hema's Kitchen is the kind of Devon Avenue institution with an origin story worth knowing: Hema Potla tried a beauty salon, then a candy store, before her husband Sam finally pushed her to turn her home cooking into a restaurant — and it stuck well enough to earn her a 2012 WBEZ profile as 'the darling of Devon.' The menu runs deep, more than 100 dishes pulling from every region of India rather than sticking to one regional lane, with the vegetable vindaloo, chicken biryani and bhuna gosht coming up again and again as the dishes regulars actually order.

It's grown enough over the decades to open a second location on Clark Street in Lincoln Park, but this Devon Avenue spot — in a bigger space than its original Oakley Street storefront — is still the flagship.
