Harper Theater in Hyde Park makes Tuesdays an actual value proposition rather than a half-measure: $6 movie tickets all day -- no matinee-only catch -- paired with $3 small drinks, $3 small popcorn, and $3 hot dogs.

The building itself has real history: constructed in 1914 and designed by Chicago architect Horatio Wilson, it opened in 1915 as a 1,200-seat vaudeville house complete with a Kimball pipe organ, before being converted into a movie theater in 1935. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Hyde Park-Kenwood Historic District.

After sitting vacant, it underwent a preservation-minded renovation restoring the brick-and-terra-cotta facade and a replica of its long-gone marquee, reopening as a four-screen, 389-seat venue that won a Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Rehabilitation in 2013. It's owned and leased out by the University of Chicago as part of the broader Harper Court redevelopment, and a later renovation under ACX Cinemas added heated, luxury reclining seats and lobby alcohol service.
