Happy Village is the kind of dive bar that makes a case for itself with a backyard alone — mismatched plastic furniture, a tent or two, and an actual goldfish pond, the sort of unpretentious patio that photographs terribly and somehow works better for it.

A $3 rotating daily beer special anchors a backyard with a goldfish pond, ping pong, and board games, inside a building that was once a tied house for the 19th-century Peter Hand Brewery.

The building itself used to be a tied house for the Peter Hand Brewery back in the 19th century, which gives a bar built entirely on cheap beer and bar food a genuinely old Chicago pedigree underneath the ping pong tables and board games. The real draw is the $3 daily beer special — a rotating pour that keeps the day-drinking crowd honest and the bill low, backed by bar food built for exactly that kind of afternoon.

It's dog-friendly, unfussy, and open long hours (into the early morning most nights), the sort of place where nobody's dressed up and the goldfish pond is doing more design work than any amount of Edison bulbs could. Ukrainian Village has gotten considerably nicer around it over the years; Happy Village hasn't bothered changing to match.
