Garifuna Flava

Super GemChicago Lawn · Garifuna/Caribbean Community-sourced, unverified
📍 2518 W 63rd St, Chicago, IL 60629

Rhodel 'Rhodee' Castillo opened this because people kept raving about his wife's home cooking — the Castillo family came to Chicago from Belize in 1986, and by 2008 enough people had eaten at their table that a restaurant became the obvious next step.

$$
One of the only Garifuna restaurants in Chicago, period — the jerk chicken gets the reputation, but stew beans and pigtail and the red snapper are just as representative of a cuisine almost nobody else in the city is cooking.

The Garifuna are an Afro-Indigenous people who settled in Belize after originating partly in Africa, with their own language, music, and food traditions that almost never show up on a Chicago menu — this is one of the only places in the city built specifically around that cuisine rather than general Caribbean fare. The jerk chicken gets most of the attention, but red snapper and stew beans and pigtail are just as representative of what the kitchen's actually doing.

It's been filmed for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Check Please, and Chicago's Best, and the Chicago Bears named it a 2023 Gameday Eats small-business winner.
