Garfield Park Conservatory

AdmissionEast Garfield Park Community-sourced, unverified
📍 300 N Central Park Ave, Chicago, IL 60624

Garfield Park Conservatory wasn't just built big -- it was built to be the biggest, designed in 1906-07 by famed Prairie School landscape architect Jens Jensen specifically to be "the largest publicly owned conservatory under one roof in the world," with a shape meant to echo Midwest haystacks rather than the ornate European glasshouses conservatories usually copy.

Jensen had just demolished three smaller greenhouses across Humboldt, Douglass, and Garfield parks in 1905 and moved many of their original plants into this single new structure, working with Prairie School architects Schmidt, Garden and Martin. The showstopper is the Palm Room, the first space visitors walk into, home to more than 70 palm varieties and, until 2012, a rare double coconut palm first planted there in 1959. A catastrophic 2011 hailstorm shattered huge sections of the glass roof, and the recovery became its own small local story: artist Bryan Northup turned broken glass into limited-edition bowls sold to help fund repairs, while the conservatory reopened in stages through January 2012.

It earned a National Medal for Museum and Library Services in 2012. It's free, year-round, for Chicago residents -- 12 acres of indoor and outdoor gardens -- with free on-site parking; non-residents may be charged $5-$10 depending on age.
