Super GemChicago Exclusive Gem$$Brothers Luis and Rigo Garcia, who had both spent years working in other people's kitchens, opened the doors on Lincoln Avenue on January 22, 1991, and the place is still family owned and operated, with a lot of the Garcia kids now carrying on their father's passion. About twenty years in, they renovated and expanded into an open dining room next to a full-service bar, which is why it works equally well for a family dinner or drinks with friends. The menu is long, generous and old-school in the best way. The headliner is Chicago's Best Burrito, steak and al pastor smothered suizo ranchero, which earned the restaurant a segment on the WGN show of the same name, and the El Garcia and mar y tierra burritos are close behind.
Beyond the burritos you get sopa de tortilla, pozole verde and caldo de camarón, sizzling fajitas up to a skirt-steak-chicken-and-shrimp super combo, camarones a la Veracruzana, pollo en mole, quesabirrias with consomé and a $75 parrillada built for two or three. Rib-eye tacos are a sleeper at $6.50. It's open every day from 11am to 11pm, and the online ordering runs through Toast.
