Galit is the Lincoln Park restaurant that made Middle Eastern cooking a Michelin-level conversation in Chicago, and it still manages to feel like someone's very talented family is feeding you.

Happy hour at the bar: Bubbe's brisket hummus, the $25 salatim spread and a glass of Lebanese arak with ice and water, as is tradition.

James Beard Award-winning chef Zachary Engel and co-owner Andrés Clavero opened it on Lincoln Avenue in 2019, and the format today is a four-course, choose-your-own-adventure dinner for $115 a person. You start with hummus to share, maybe Bubbe's brisket with smoky cinnamon and braised carrots, or masabacha with whole chickpeas and Aleppo, plus a spread of salatim like labneh with hyssop and baba ganoush buried under chives. Then you pick a mezze, falafel with funky mango, foie gras on toasty challah or an Iraqi kubbeh halab in a crispy saffron crust, and a main from the coals, like lamb roulade with mahleb jus, smoked turkey shawarma or a Lower East Side-meets-Armenia pastrami. The real insider move is happy hour.

Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 6pm, the bar and communal table are walk-in only, any hummus is $15, the whole salatim spread is $25, and cocktails, wines and arak are $10, with a la carte dining at the communal table on those nights too. Book the full dinner on Resy, and know that a 20% hospitality charge funds the team's wages and benefits. Cafe Yaya, the sister spot, is right next door.
