Firecakes is named for the fried 'firecakes' Karen Fox's grandfather, William 'Billy' Hobbs, made in a cast-iron pot over an open fire while baking for 1930s logging camps in northern Wisconsin, and the shop's recipe is built on his. The old fashioneds are the house style, from the buttermilk classic to the Pistachio Old Fashioned in Sicilian pistachio glaze, alongside yeast donuts like chocolate iced and the stacked Birthday Cake. For anyone avoiding gluten or dairy, the vegan, gluten-friendly chocolate donut is the one to ask for; it's made with almond flour, though in the same kitchen as everything else, so it isn't safe for celiacs.
