Esquire

Gold Coast · Steakhouse/Japanese Community-sourced, unverified
📍 58 E Oak St, Chicago, IL 60611

Esquire reopened Oak Street's most storied marquee — the 1938 Esquire Theatre, the same building Cooper's Hawk tried and failed to turn into a restaurant a few years back — as MStreet Collective's flagship steakhouse, a 265-seat room built around a wagyu program that pulls cuts from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. side by side.

$$$$
ŌakSho — a 12-seat omakase counter hidden behind shoji screens inside an invite-only upstairs club, open 5 nights a week at $285/person, with the four-level 5,000-bottle wine tower from the building's prior tenant as the downstairs room's centerpiece.

The kitchen bills itself as Japanese in format, French in foundation, and the previous tenant's four-level, 5,000-bottle wine tower survived the gut renovation intact — it's still the room's visual anchor. The real curiosity sits upstairs: 58 Club, an invitation-only private club, hides a twelve-seat omakase counter called OakSho behind sliding shoji screens, open five nights a week with two seatings a night at $285 a head, and non-members can get in only when there's room.

Downstairs stays the public-facing steakhouse — big-format wagyu, French technique, a theatre's worth of history overhead. No happy hour or discount turned up in research, and this isn't a restaurant built around one; it's priced and positioned as a special-occasion room from the ground up.
