Elba's Golden Steer

Super GemForest Park (suburb) · Steakhouse Community-sourced, unverified
📍 7635 Roosevelt Rd, Forest Park, IL 60130

The building opened in 1934 as the Irish West Side Bar, run by Abraham Lincoln Hopkins and his brother-in-law Thomas Hodge; by the 1950s it had become the Pink Clock, a bar best remembered now as mobster Sam Giancana's hideaway.

The French onion soup is the classic starter, and the filet is the reason this old-school steakhouse has held onto its regulars for years.

Greek immigrant John Vlahos turned it into the Golden Steer steakhouse because he wanted to own something of his own, sold it to his brother Taki in 1979, and ownership passed through the Tzouras family (Kiriakos and Gus) from 1997 until 2023. That's when Elba Caragher, who'd worked there for 23 years, bought the restaurant and the building outright from the retiring Tzouras cousins, with one stated promise: nothing changes.

The French onion soup and the filet are the two dishes that have survived every single ownership change along the way. Closed Sundays.
