DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center

AdmissionWashington Park Community-sourced, unverified
📍 740 E 56th Pl, Chicago, IL 60637

Dr. Margaret Taylor-Burroughs chartered the DuSable Museum on February 16, 1961, with her husband Charles Burroughs and a handful of others — the first museum in the entire country built specifically around African American history and culture, at a time mainstream museums didn't cover it at all.

It's still doing that job from the same corner of Washington Park on the South Side, not a satellite wing of a bigger downtown institution.

Free every Wednesday (reserve online, residency confirmed by zip code) — the natural first stop for anyone tracing Chicago's South Side history, not an add-on to a Loop museum day.
