Double Clutch parks a rotating collection inside, from European roadsters to rare performance machines, and then backs it up with some of the best German-style beer in the country. That's not hype. In 2022, a year after opening on Ashland Avenue in north Evanston, the Vandalay Brands brewery was named Great American Beer Festival Brewery of the Year in its size class, and head brewer Scott Frank took Brewer of the Year. The trophies kept coming after that: GABF silvers for the Helles Lager, the Helles Rauchbier and the Altbier, plus a World Beer Cup bronze. The year-round lineup reads like a tour of Germany. There's a Munich helles, a Cologne Kölsch, a Düsseldorf alt, a northern German pilsener, a hazy hefeweizen and a smoked Bamberg-style lager that Frank says was inspired by drinking straight from the barrel at Schlenkerla.
The kitchen leans into the beer. Turnbuckle pretzels come with jalapeño bier cheese made with the house Kölsch, cheese curds are Kölsch-battered, and the sausage platter includes a Käsekrainer. Happy hour runs weekdays from 3 to 5pm, with $5 drafts and $2 off appetizers. There's brunch on weekends, and the room is big enough for walk-in groups. Reservations are for parties of eight or more by phone, and takeout runs through Toast.
