Demera has been in every edition of the Michelin Guide's Chicago selections, which is a quietly remarkable streak for a neighborhood Ethiopian restaurant on the corner of Lawrence and Broadway.

Chef-owner Tigist Reda learned to cook from the elder women in her family before coming to the US in the early 2000s, spent years cooking as a home chef, and opened Demera in Uptown in 2007 to share that hospitality with the whole city instead of one client at a time. The way to eat here is the way the tradition intends: a messob platter of meat or vegetable stews and sides spread across a sheet of injera, the spongy, slightly sour teff flatbread that doubles as plate and utensil, with more injera on the side for scooping. Michelin's inspectors singled out the yesiga wot — beef simmered in a berbere sauce, served with split peas and collard greens — and the vegetarian side of the menu is deep enough that a meatless table won't feel like an afterthought.

No happy hour or standing discount could be confirmed, so treat this as a destination rather than a deal; it's moderately priced ($$) regardless. Demera also runs a stall at Time Out Market Chicago in Fulton Market if you can't make it up to Uptown. The restaurant is open 4 to 9pm Monday through Thursday, 11:30am to 10pm Friday and Saturday, and 11:30am to 9pm Sunday, with last seating 30 minutes before close, a short walk from the Lawrence Red Line stop.
