Club Lucky has been shaking martinis on a quiet Bucktown corner since 1990, and it was built to look about fifty years older than that.

A genuinely family-friendly Italian supper club, the kind of room that still feels like a special occasion without needing to try hard at it.

Owner Jim Higgins, a Humboldt Park native, pitched it as "a 1940's supper club and cocktail lounge on the verge of the 1950's," and he committed to the bit: red Naugahyde booths, porthole windows, a barrel ceiling, antique stainless martini shakers stacked behind a round-mirrored black Formica bar, and a free-play period jukebox. The dining room used to be a neighborhood dance hall. It still has that night-out hum. Start in the lounge with the Killer Martini, the oversized house pour (voted Chicago's best, as the restaurant will remind you) with jumbo olives the bar stuffs by hand with blue cheese or anchovy. There's even a house-label Club Lucky Vodka. Then go red-sauce: Chicken Vesuvio with garlic, peas and Vesuvio potatoes, which the menu calls "Our Chicago Specialty"; homemade 8 Finger Cavatelli in the house marinara; Nonna's Meatball Insalata; and the Club Lucky Salad, built to serve two. Every dessert is made in house, from tiramisu to a buttermilk chocolate layer cake.

The logistics: dinner nightly, lunch only Wednesday through Friday (11:30AM-3PM), and the lounge pours until 12:30AM most nights, 1:30AM Friday and 2AM Saturday. Book on Resy, and know they only seat complete parties. Three patios run March through November. There's no happy hour; the discount is the size of the martini. In 2021 one couple left a $2,000 tip on a $137 dinner here, twenty years after their first date in booth No. 46. That tells you most of what you need to know.
