Skip the ticket: grab a seat at the Performance Bar after 5pm and the magicians come to you in 20-minute close-up sets.

You walk into what looks like a working Andersonville laundromat on Clark Street, find the hidden entrance, and land in an Art Deco speakeasy built around a very specific piece of Chicago history. Bar magic was born here: Matt Schulien doing tableside tricks at his family's restaurant on Halsted, bartender Johnny Paul copying him behind the bar at the LaSalle Hotel, and Jim Ryan's Magic Tap becoming the first magic bar in the world in the 1930s. By the time those rooms closed, Chicago-style close-up magic, fast, funny and inches from your face, had nowhere to live. This is its home now.

The Performance Bar opens nightly at 5pm, needs no ticket, and has a rotating cast of magicians working the room in 20-minute sets while you drink, with small plates from 6pm. The ticketed shows happen in the Harry Blackstone Cabaret: the Close-Up Show on Mondays, a house Showcase on Tuesdays, David Parr's Time Traveler on Wednesdays, and the full Signature Show Thursday through Sunday, which sells out on weekends. Monday through Wednesday from 8 to 10pm, the Bewitching Hour brings specially priced cocktails. It is 21 and over, 16 and up with a guardian.
