Canal Street Eatery & Market is the West Loop's all-day Italian-leaning hangout tucked into the base of the 314 S Canal building, a few steps from Union Station, and it is built for commuters who want something better than a sad desk lunch or a train-platform beer.

By day there's a grab-and-go market for coffee and quick bites, and at lunch and dinner the kitchen, led by executive chef Ross Sundberg, turns out handmade pizzas, pastas and New American plates with an Italian accent. The pizzas include a spicy soppressata with Fresno honey, a Bismark with prosciutto and egg, and a truffle pie with wild mushrooms and onion jam, while the pastas run from linguini carbonara and cacio e pepe to butternut squash gnocchi and a casarecce Bolognese. Starters include truffle arancini, soppressata meatballs, grilled octopus and burrata with cranberry mostarda. Two deals make it worth planning around.

Weekday happy hour from 3 to 6 brings $10 spritzes, $12 old fashioneds and lychee martinis, $9 wines, $5 beers, $13 pizzas and a $7 mini Italian beef, dine-in only. Italiano Weekends, Fridays from 11am and Saturdays from 4pm, is unlimited pizza and pasta for $25 a person with kids under 12 free and two hours of complimentary parking at 333 S Clinton. There's also outdoor seating at the Green at 320. Book on Resy; it's closed Sundays.
