Chef Michael Altenberg, who trained under Jean Banchet at Le Français and later opened Bistro Campagne in Lincoln Square, founded it, and chef Vince Di Battista has kept the kitchen focused on the same rustic, seasonal Italian cooking. The current menu reads like a short, confident list of things done right. Starters include diver scallops over parsnip purée with crispy pancetta and a veal reduction, octopus with gigante beans and honey, bruschetta with whipped feta and artichoke, and a wood-fired radicchio wrapped in bacon with basil aioli and goat cheese. The pastas are the core, from pappardelle Bolognese with a veal and pork ragu to tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and porcini butter, gemelli with braised pork sausage and a spicy linguini diavolo with shrimp and bay scallops.
Mains run to balsamic-braised short ribs, roasted duck over polenta with sour cherry mostarda, a grilled pork chop with maple agrodolce and a chicken Milanese, and the desserts, from tiramisu to sticky toffee date cake, are all $13. A $75 family-meal carryout feeds four. Reservations are by phone, and its sister restaurant is Union Pizza in Evanston.
