Cairo Kebab rebuilt itself in University Village after its original Lincoln Park location closed, and it's become one of the only real Egyptian restaurants on Chicago's map in the process.

The kitchen runs fully Zabiha halal, and the dish to know by name is koshary — a layered mix of rice, lentils, pasta, and a tangy tomato sauce finished with crispy fried onions that's as close as Egyptian cooking gets to a national dish. Molokheya (a garlicky, jute-leaf stew) and a lentil soup that one reviewer said tasted like real home cooking round out a menu built for people who already know Egyptian food, not a simplified gateway version of it.

Posted hours vary a little between the restaurant's own ordering platform and third-party delivery apps, so it's worth double-checking before a specific-time visit, but this is a real, functioning kitchen with its own website and online ordering — not just a delivery-app ghost listing.
