Bunny Chow takes its name directly from the dish it serves — a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry, South Africa's answer to a bread bowl and one of the country's defining street foods.

The owner picked up the format while attending college in Durban, South Africa, where bunny chow actually originated, and brought it back to Rogers Park rather than approximating it secondhand. The lineup runs spicy lamb, chicken, and veggie curries packed into the bread, with newer additions like chicken teriyaki and beef stew rounding things out.

South African food is still genuinely hard to find anywhere in Chicago, which makes this one of the only places in the city to try the real version of a dish most people have never heard of, let alone eaten.
