BRGRBELLY

Portage Park · Burgers Community-sourced, unverified
📍 5739 W Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL 60634

BRGRBELLY has a real underdog origin story behind the burgers: it opened in March 2013 as Leadbelly, founded by chef Steve O'Brien (by way of Carlos') and his wife Nicole Masse O'Brien, a Chicago Public Schools sixth-grade teacher who walked out during a teachers' strike and never went back to the classroom — choosing to run the restaurant full-time instead.

The name later changed to BRGRBELLY, and a sister Gladstone Park location has since closed, leaving this Portage Park original as the real deal. The burgers back up the story: a 7-ounce patty blending house-ground chuck with smoked pork belly, fresh-baked bread, and hand-cut fries, with the Old Time Religion (roasted tomato, goat cheese, arugula, truffle aioli) and the Midnight Special (chili cheese Fritos, pico de gallo, chipotle cream) standing out as the menu's two most distinctive builds.

It's a genuine neighborhood counter on a stretch of the Northwest Side that doesn't get much food-media attention, built by people who clearly bet everything on getting the burger itself right rather than chasing trends.
